Art Nouveau

The Art Nouveau (1885-1917) period is part of the late Victorian period as well as the Edwardian period. Art Nouveau motifs and styles of decoration were popular in many art forms. Artists of the Art Nouveau period revolted against industrialization which which was dominating life during this era. Artists turned to nature for inspiration. Art Nouveau motifs included serpents, dragonflies, water lilies, flowers, swans, peacocks, and interwoven, asymmetrical flowing lines.

Many artists of the Art Nouveau period reflected a style of decoration in their sculptures which included designs based on linear patterns of sinuous curves. The style is richly ornamental and asymmetrical, often characterized by images of twining plant tendrils, insects and birds, and other depictions of nature in dreamlike and exotic forms. The artists often chose themes fraught with the symbols of sexuality, death, and resurrection. Some of the more radical Art Nouveau proponents believed that their work had a social aim of providing pleasant and uplifting surroundings at a price affordable to a broad segment of society rather than just the privileged few.
