This bronze is pictured on page 148 (A70a) in "The Barye Bronzes, a catalogue raisonne" by Stuart Pivar. Produced by Susse Fes Ed. Paris after Barye's death ca. 1880's. Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1876) the earliest and most famous sculptor of the French animalier school. This bronze measures just over 20 inches in length and 121/2 inches high. The base is 93/4 inches wide and 19 inches long. The Four Winds Collection acquired this outstanding piece from the estate of a west coast collector, who originally purchased the piece in New York 20 years earlier from a prominent New Yorker. Information provided by the seller said that New York owner was the owner of a museum. We have not attempted to confirm this information.
I recently received information that Barye sold the mold to this piece to Maison Susse in the 1829. The Susse Foundry produced this piece along with two smaller versions. This information is from the Walters Gallery book "UNTAMED,The Art of Antoine-Louis Barye".
